It’s been another busy year at Chemistry Central, so we thought we’d round it off with a look at some of the year’s highlights for us and the chemistry community.
Integration with Springer Chemistry
Chemistry Central, initially launched in 2006 by BioMed Central, was this year fully integrated into the Springer Chemistry publishing platform, sitting alongside Springer’s comprehensive chemistry journal and book programme, and adding the visibility and reach of the global publisher to the open-access values at the heart of Chemistry Central. To mark the centennial of the discovery that X-rays could be diffracted through crystalline material, the United Nations named 2014 the International Year of Crystallography. At Chemistry Central Journal we are celebrating this by running a thematic series on ‘Current Topics in Chemical Crystallography’ with our Editorial Board member and renowned crystallographer, Michael B. We are delighted to announce that Mario Pagliaro, a chemistry and solar energy scholar at Italy’s National Research Council (CNR), has joined the Editorial Board of Sustainable Chemical Processes.
Mario co-ordinates Sicily’s new solar energy and sustainable development regional research Centre. His research interests are in the broad areas of nanochemistry, solar energy, and sustainable development. Research carried out in his group in co-operation with researchers in 11 countries, has resulted in several new nanochemistry-based products.
Mario is also currently Editing a thematic series ‘Biorefineries: towards shaping a sustainable world‘ in Sustainable Chemical Processes that focuses on the latest research in biorefineries appealing to investigators at research institutions and commercial enterprises across the entire biomass value chain.
We are pleased to announce the addition of two new researchers to the Sustainable Chemical Processes Editorial Board.
Professor Karen Wilson, Chair of Catalysis and Research Director of the European Bioenergy Research institute at Aston University, UK joins the board. Her research interests lie in the design of heterogeneous catalysts for clean chemical synthesis, particularly the design of tuneable porous materials for sustainable biofuels and chemicals production from renewable resources.

Heritage Science was in Vienna from the 1st-5th July as a sponsor, exhibitor and official publishing partner of the 3rd International Congress on Chemistry for Cultural Heritage.
The congress was held at the beautiful Academy of Fine Arts and was organised by Heritage Science Editor and Head of the Institute of Science and Technology in Art, Vienna – Manfred Schreiner. The research presented covered a broad range of topics in the context of chemistry related to cultural heritage, conservation science, conservation-restoration and preservation of cultural heritage.

Last week Sustainable Chemical Processes attended and exhibited at the 10th edition of the International Conference on Renewable Resources & Biorefineries in Valladolid, Spain. The conference provided a fantastic platform to discuss the on-going developments in industrial biotechnology and sustainable chemistry related to the use of renewable raw materials. A vast amount of topics were covered with talks ranging from the use of renewable resources in fashion to replace leather all the way to how new lysine-derived sealants may be the next best development in surgical adhesives. Our own Editorial Board member, Dr Carol Lin presented highlights from her research on the valorization of food waste for sustainable production of chemicals, materials and fuels.
