A group of researchers at the University of Southampton is inviting readers to explore their laboratory notebook in their latest paper published in Chemistry Central Journal on the synthesis and characterisation of a set of 4-substituted methylidene oxindoles. This class of compounds has demonstrated anticancer properties, and inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) and platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR), linked with angiogenesis.

This year proved to be an exciting time at Chemistry Central. As well as two new journal launches (Heritage Science and Sustainable Chemical Processes), a collection of themed series from Chemistry Central Journal and Journal of Cheminformatics were published highlighting emerging key topics concerning the chemistry community.
Throughout the year Chemistry Central Journal has been publishing papers for the ‘Emerging Contaminants’ thematic series. This year saw the launch of two new open access journals for Chemistry Central. Heritage Science, launched in April covering the use of scientific techniques to study cultural heritage and Sustainable Chemical Processes in May which covers scientific and engineering aspects of sustainable approaches in chemistry.
Within the first month Heritage Science published 14 articles and had over 10,000 articles accesses. Editor-in-Chief, Dr Richard Brereton highlighted the need for this journal in his guest blog earlier this year. The journal officially launched at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam during the Technart 2013 conference in September and was met with great success. The salvaged Vasa warship, the ‘jewel of the Swedish Navy’, has been evaluated and a strategy for future support is published in the open access journal Heritage Science this week. The assessment involved a review of all essential data on the ship’s oak material and the results will help conservation efforts on one of the most important treasures of Sweden.
The Vasa warship was built between 1626 and 1628. Top heavy, she sank on her maiden voyage, after sailing less than 1.5km. Though her bronze cannons were salvaged in the 17th century, she lay on the seabed until 1961, when she was eventually salvaged.
